Being part of Guy One's group she is the voice on his radio hit "Estre". Furthermore, she is a member of Alogte Oho's Sounds of Joy and can be heard on his smasher "Mam Yinne Wa". Last but not least, Jimi Tenor chose her to sing on his instant club classic "Vocalize My Luv". In addition to all these cooperations, Florence has locally released a series of albums under her own name and without a doubt, she can be called the queen of Frafra-Gospel.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">"Mam Pe'ela Su'ure" is a typical Frafra-Gospel Hymn, sung during Sunday services accompanied only with shakers and hand clapping. Our version here is backed up by Kumasi's finest High Life players, who transform the song into a massive wave of groove. "Naba Aferda" is a homage to the Chief of Zuarungu, Florence's home village, which was also the home village of the legendary Christy Azuma, who became the first international Frafra-Star in the 70s. Christy was always a big inspiration for Florence and makes her proud to be from a small village called Zuarungu.</div><iframe style="border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="https://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=2727341707/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=333333/tracklist=false/artwork=small/transparent=true/" seamless><a href="https://florenceadooni.bandcamp.com/album/mam-peela-suure">Mam Pe'ela Su'ure by Florence Adooni</a></iframe>Mundo Urbanohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14752118961274904823noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28161611.post-16561029884271665712021-06-26T04:33:00.001-07:002021-06-26T04:33:16.020-07:00EXOTICA #005 - BRAND NEW SERIES OF EXOTIC/INTERNATIONAL / RARE GROOVES<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC43dV9b3zB6kivjI3ar1oQ_TxSBTNNi8ENuMLWIu0UCL9jrVLeu8SKkruNgnbB3-YSvCOZSkN0AUyxRKRuE2A7gCLremN57V_snu9TzsbbNrGdIEDTLd4EhmiCBAa61QD9jdS/s540/Sem+T%25C3%25ADtulo-1+%25281%2529.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="540" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC43dV9b3zB6kivjI3ar1oQ_TxSBTNNi8ENuMLWIu0UCL9jrVLeu8SKkruNgnbB3-YSvCOZSkN0AUyxRKRuE2A7gCLremN57V_snu9TzsbbNrGdIEDTLd4EhmiCBAa61QD9jdS/s16000/Sem+T%25C3%25ADtulo-1+%25281%2529.png" /></a></div><br /><div>"Exotica" is The Brand New series of Exotic/International / Rare grooves mixed & selected by Bruno Lopes (also known as Mundo Urbano). <a href="https://mundourbano.blogspot.com/2020/12/exotica-005-brand-new-series-of.html" target="_blank">Original post at Mundo Urbano, December 06, 2020</a>.</div>

Besides distinctively exploring Lõo and Kalevi's batterie & percussion work with deep-listening quality drum mixes there are elements of impulsive beauty, particularly on "Essens" free carrying sax solo. The album partly reaches for well-known directions of jazz from the '70s in the vain of the cosmic, psychedelic, improvised, atonal, and spiritual, but the particularness lies within the rhythm & mix – like a rubber band stretched in 4 dimensions. As the album title implies Entendre is about hearing as a creative process, referencing the patient unfolding of Bärtch’s modular polymetric pieces, with alertness to the dynamics of touch, finding freedom in aesthetic restriction, serving the flow of each piece’s development while also taking the music to new places. Illustrating the richness and versatility of the composers and musicians on this collection, the music spans a wide yet coherent range of styles: samba, funk fusion, modal, spiritual, post-bop, and bossa all combine to present an aural portrait of a jazz scene that was constantly moving and shifting its multiple musical centres of gravity.</p><p>Mastered at the Grammy-nominated Carvery studio in London, many of the tracks featured are reissued for the first time, including mega-rare private press cuts from the YasuhiroKohno Trio, Masaru Imada Trio, and Hideyasu Terakawa Quartet. There’s heavy post modal bop by J Jazz legends Kohsuke Mine and Koichi Matsukaze; samba heat from Tatsuya Nakamura, Hideo Shiraki and Seiichi Nakamura; and funky dance floor energy by Hiroshi Murakami, Ryojiro Furusawa Quartet and Shigeharu Mukai.</p><p>Selected albums from which the tracks are drawn will be reissued in full as part of the acclaimed BBE Music J Jazz Masterclass Series. Released as a deluxe, heavyweight x3 vinyl set in a gatefold sleeve with obi strip and insert, the collection comes with extensive artist biographies and track information. J Jazz volume 3 is also available in a 2 CD set with three bonus tracks, and selected tracks are available across digital platforms for download and streaming.</p><p>J Jazz is conceived, compiled, and annotated by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden for BBE Music. Highly Recommended!</p>

Guraj</a> - Introspection / Migration (<a href="https://mapledeathrecords.bandcamp.com/" target="_blank">Maple Death Records</a>) From an ocean of black, sometimes there is a slim chance you might emerge clean and translucent, with another life chapter under your belt and a renewed story to tell. J.H. Guraj, our favorite wandering bird, is back with his first proper opus on Maple Death: Introspection / Migration.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Sometimes records lead off into an unknown path that never considers release schedules or the outside world, inhabiting the abysses of the artists’ mind and dropping a hefty anchor in the murky waters. Dominique Vaccaro, stage name Guraj in homage to an old sage picker from the Albanian rocky landscape, started Introspection / Migration on a two-day recording spree in 2014 using a resophonic guitar, a distinct unifying songbook theme, and his usual freestyle wizardry … then the dust settled. In between releasing Underrated Glances At The Edge Of Town (Maple Death, 2016), Steadfast On Our Sand (Boring Machines, 2018), touring with Be My Delay and his experiments as Vaccaro Overlapped Memories (Tsss Tapes, 2019) and Close Distances (Dinzu Artefacts, 2018), his determination to finish this album never wandered.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Informed by his work over the last ten years as a visual artist and electro-acoustic musician, he kept chipping away, adding layers, sounds, field recordings, percussion while maintaining the pureness, soul, and integrity of the original guitar recording; a five-year-long inner journey, a long-drawn-out process of migration and settlement. The additions not only augment reality, they hyper-define it, a beautiful crisp photograph where an empty woven chair is ready to welcome you in through the rollicking Middle-Eastern theme ‘Furnace’; ‘Closer’ weaves and intersects with that loose tightness found in greats like Mick Turner and Loren Connors, while ‘Yet Still’ stumbles elegantly creating a suspension in time before crashing into a circular hail storm. ‘Migration’ is the perfect closing elegy, uplifted by men’s chants recorded in Marrakesh, a Western lament of rare beauty and timeless nature that feels present, comforting, and fading at the same time.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The resophonic guitar used in the recordings now rests in Firmo, the small Arbëreshë town, buried deep amongst the hills of Italy’s most Southern region Calabria where the artists’ father resides. There is no burden of history in Guraj’s music, there is movement, resolution, and exodus, a reassembling of the soul through instinctive and unique guitar-delia.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Strange stumblings of time, unexpected arrangements of tones, a voice, and depth of emotion which in the history of guitar playing is exceedingly rare. Culled from three and a half hours of 1965 recordings by writers/artists/poets Brion Gysin and Paul Bowles, the first batch of Jilala recordings were released on a 1965 LP that was scarce even upon its initial release. The second batch of Recordings, which this LP has drawn from, came in the form of a CD by Baraka Foundation in 1998, which is also now long out of print.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">In the original liner notes Ira Cohen provides a breakdown of the Jilala ensemble: "The instruments used are the shebaba, a long transversal cane flute, which leads the way; the bendir, a handheld drum resembling a tambourine without cymbals; and the karkabat which is a double castanet made of metal. On this record, there are usually three flutes, six drums, and one pair of castanets." In conjunction with the qraqaba -- an iron analog to the wooden castanets featured heavily in the Flamenco music of the Roma people that also flourished over the centuries mere miles to the north in southern Spain. These bendir drums provide a range very similar to that covered in contemporary popular music by the bass drum, snare, and cymbals that make up a standard drum kit. The Trance-inducing grooves were major influences on such bands as Led Zeppelin, Agitation Free, Can, and The Rolling Stones. Recommended!</p>

Compiled by long-time friends of the label, Eiji Taniguchi and Norio Sato, Heisei No Oto delves into a world of music released almost exclusively on CD and brings together a fascinating selection of discoveries from a little known and overlooked part of Japan’s musical history.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The last ten or so years have seen a global wave of interest in Japanese music encompassing ambient, jazz, new wave, and pop records from the 1980s, some of which is increasingly considered the most innovative and visionary music of that time. Although some music from this period, in the form of ‘City Pop’ or ‘rare groove’ records, had been coveted by collectors and DJs for a number of years, most Japanese music from the time was little known outside and often even within Japan.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Sometime around the mid-2000s, two Osaka record store owners, Eiji Taniguchi of Revelation Time and Norio Sato of Rare Groove, along with a handful of deep Japanese diggers such as Chee Shimizu of Organic Music records in Tokyo, began to explore beyond the typical ‘grooves’ or ‘breaks’. Much like their counterparts in Europe and the US, they began delving into home-grown ambient, jazz, new wave, and pop records, discovering visionary music, often driven by synthesizers or drum computers, that broke beyond the typical confines of their genres.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Spending tireless hours in local record stores and embarking on digging trips across the country, Eiji Taniguchi and Norio Sato, much like Chee Shimizu, have been at the forefront of unearthing and introducing many of the very Japanese records now loved and sought after around the world. Yet as YouTube algorithms and vinyl reissues would transport such music into the global consciousness and demand and therefore scarcity intensified for such records, so Eiji and Norio have recently begun to turn their attention to CDs.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The title of the compilation Heisei No Oto refers to the sound of the Heisei era, which began in 1989 and corresponds to the reign of Emperor Akihito until his abdication in 2019. Marking the culmination of one of the most rapid economic growths in Japanese history, 1989 also coincided with the music industry’s final shift away from vinyl in favor of CDs. And, although compact discs were first introduced seven years earlier it wasn’t until late into the ‘80s that, beyond dance music labels, CDs became the exclusive format for major and independent labels in Japan and throughout the world.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">This however didn’t signal the end of the innovation in Japan. Many of those same musicians who have become known for their work in the ‘80s would continue to produce outstanding music well into the mid-'90s, as greater innovation and advances in musical equipment allowed Japanese musicians and producers to refine and explore new sounds. While musicians such as the seminal Haruomi Hosono, whose productions feature on a number of tracks, would continue to push the boundaries of these new technologies, these technological advances also meant less established musicians were able to make use of increasingly affordable but state-of-the-art equipment.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Including music by Haruomi Hosono as well as Yasuaki Shimizu, Toshifumi Hinata, and Ichiko Hashimoto who have become known and loved around the world in recent years, Hesei No Oto also features Japanese pop star Yosui Inoue, producers Jun Sato and Keisuke Kikuchi in addition to less established artists from the contemporary, jazz, new wave, pop and dance music scenes. Bringing together a selection of tracks that seem to define these specific genres and in fact move fluidly between a number of them, the music on the compilation is again underscored by experimentations with synthesizers and drum computers though with something of a gentle Pop sensibility. Reimagined here than under the encompassing term ‘Left-field Pop’, this is an exciting chapter in Japanese musical history that has only just begun to be fully explored. releases March 15, 2021. The Mega Wave Orchestra, the brain-child of musician, mathematician, and composer Christian Oestreicher, was conceived as a multi-media electronic music orchestra.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was comprised of seven keyboard players Christine Schaller, Vincent Barras, Jacques Demierre, Olivier Rogg, Rainer Boesch, Roger Baudet, and Benoit Corboz, with Oestreicher as arranger and producer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Mega Wave Orchestra created a piece of new hybrid music. It was music with roots in the jazz and classical traditions, but one which also drew on the sonic freedom of musique concrete and the kind of total experience offered by psychedelia. The diverse backgrounds and specialisms of each of the band leaders/writers resulted in a wide variety of music across the five discs: from austere drones and granular aural detail to warm oddball fusion and gorgeous but cracked vocal jazz.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are useful contemporary comparisons to be made: zoned synth jazz like the Azimuth LP on ECM or Karin Krog’s Freestyle; Larry Heard’s sequencer Dreamtime; the Valium minimalism of Pep Llopis or Jun Fukamaki; Dexter Wansel’s shimmering arrangements for Loose Ends, or even the FM sheen meets cold war threat of Donald Fagen’s Night Fly. Here, too, is the sound of music technology about to snowball and define its own aesthetic, unknowingly prefiguring auteurish bedroom producers like Black Dog or The Detroit Escalator Company. Origens Da Luz brings together a selection of recordings drawn from a body of work that was originally recorded between 1986 and 1994. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Priscilla was raised in a musical family in São Paulo and learned the cello and guitar at an early age. She then embarked on a deeply personal musical journey that would travel from origins rooted in Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque to recording the music of the natural world and the communities around her. A film-maker and anthropologist by training, Priscilla is a lifelong student of universal music. Disillusioned with contemporary European classical music, she spent long periods living with indigenous populations in Brazil, collecting instruments that she would later combine with synthesizers and field recordings. After studying with the renowned Taoist master Liu Pai Lin, she integrated the slow-moving pace of Tai Chi into a music that connects intimately with a multiplicity of cultures at the same time that it unmistakably reflects her Brazilian soul.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Combining sounds drawn from the history of Brazil with her own explorations of analog sound technology, Priscilla’s music opens up a mystical space, where ancient and modern evolves into a new language. Compiled by John Gómez and released on 2xLP, Origens Da Luz offers a panoramic view of this artist’s unique and mesmerizing sound world. </div>

T</span><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">HE SORCERERS - Summoning The Monkey God <a href="https://atarecords.bandcamp.com/" target="_blank">(ATA)</a> Taken from the upcoming LP 'In Search of The Lost City of The Monkey God', 'Summoning The Monkey God' covers a wide range of influences: Ethiopiques Ethio-Jazz rubs up against European library music of the 60s and 70s. The Sorcerers seamlessly blend these disparate elements into one cohesive sound. Based in ATA Records' home of Leeds, The Sorcerers form the backbone of the ATA Records house band including drummer Joost Hendrickx (Kefaya, Shatner's Bassoon, Abstract Orchestra) and ATA label heads Neil Innes (Bass & Guitar) and Pete Williams (Woodwinds & Percussion). Bass clarinets, flutes, and esoteric percussion that sit alongside bass, guitar and drums are essential to The Sorcerers sound providing cinematic textures on top of a solid rhythmic foundation.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">
'Summoning the Monkey God' is an edit of a track from their forthcoming 2nd LP. Hypnotic bass and ominous vibraphone set the stage for creeping guitar and menacing drums. Flutes and Bass Clarinet push through the undergrowth with the tracks' main theme before disappearing back into the shadows of the jungle.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">
The b-side 'End Credits' is also taken from the album alongside an exclusive 45 only version 'End Credits (Alternate Version)'. Both b-sides feature Flautist Chip Wickham ('Sombra' & 'Shamal Wind' - Lovemonk Records). 'End Credits' conjures up images of Isaac Hayes and 70s exploitation soundtracks, with the alternate version spilling over with Chip Wickham's trademark flute fire alongside wah wah guitar and furious drums. Released November 29, 2019. Tip!</span></div>

Collecting sought after records and other archival gems, this lengthy EP is a joyous, synthy excursion through sunny climes, from the MIDI brass and plastic slap bass of "Leg Pulling" to the intricate percussion and live sax of "Bara-Hum-Ba." SOSENA GEBRE EYESUS - Sosena Gebre Eyesus (<a href="https://www.littleaxerecords.com/" target="_blank">Little Axe Records</a>) Ethiopian artist Sosena Gebre Eyesus sings accompanied by her playing of the Begena, or King David’s Harp, one of the world’s oldest and most beguiling instruments. Since ancient times the Harp of David has been used as an aural balm, a soother of evil and disturbed spirits —it’s low, buzzing tones widely noted for their ability to sweetly refresh one’s soul. Said to have been brought to Ethiopia in biblical times by Menelik I, it has long been the central instrument used to accompany Ethiopian Orthodox hymns, which Eyesus plays here in an absolutely entrancing manner while softly singing songs of devotional reflection. Featuring six beautiful hymns that gently unspool at the measured pace of a lullaby, Sosena Gebre Eyesus magically creates a rarefied atmosphere that feels absolutely necessary and vital for these most turbulent of days. <div style="text-align: justify;">
Founded by long-time friends Gerard Kurdjian and Stéphane Olivier alongside compatriot Christian Berthier in 1983, Nakara Percussions was a trio from the south of France, fascinated with percussion instruments, rhythms and textures from across the world. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Steeped in Jazz and ethnographic recordings, the trio designed and built their own instruments and played across the South of France throughout the 80s, recording a single album in the tiny village of Alliens in 1984. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Self-produced and mainly sold at gigs, the record reflects the inquisitive, experimental approach of the group and has become a cult album among DJs and music lovers for its blend of complex rhythms and organic soundscapes, taking in everything from Brazilian batucada to Indian tabla rhythms by way of West African thumb pianos and the drums of the Maghreb. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Nakara Percussions came into being in 1983. Stéphane both lived in Grasse were both percussionists. We asked Christian Berthier to join us – he was an excellent drummer who also lived in the area. He brought a lot of skill to the group, and there were more musical possibilities as a trio than a duo. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Later on - after we had recorded the album - we were joined by Jean Luc Cedaha, a superb percussionist who had been a member of the famous Zaka Percussions group (led by Guem) in Paris in the 70s. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The name of the group comes from the Naqara, known in Medieval Europe as the Nacaire. It was a musical instrument used by the Saracen armies – big drums that were mounted in pairs on the backs of horses or camels and used to set the pace for the soldiers. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We liked the idea of these big drums being used to lead the charge so we named the group after the instrument. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The idea behind the group was to summon the sounds and textures of different music from around the world: Africa, Asia, Brazil, the Caribbean, Cuba, India, the Middle East and so on. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the time there was nothing else like it in the area but we knew some local jazz musicians in Grasse and Nice – we didn’t share the bill with them as a group but often played percussion at their concerts. The rock and jazz scenes didn’t really have an impact on what we were doing, even though we were (and are) big fans of Jazz.” </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://moshea.bandcamp.com/">Michael O'Shea</a> - Michael O'Shea (<a href="https://www.discogs.com/label/1403105-Allchival">Allchival</a>) Having sold his instruments to fund a nomadic 1970s lifestyle, eccentric Irish experimentalist Michael O’Shea was forced to create his own handmade answer to the sitars and zelochords he’d become accustomed to playing on his travels around the globe. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Using an old door, 17 strings, chopsticks and combining them with phasers, echo units and amplification, the new device was to become his signature sound, mixing Irish folk influences with Asian and North African sounds in a mesmerising and soulful new way that brought him to the attention of the leading improvisers of his day - Alice Coltrane, Ravi Shankar, Don Cherry and more. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A logical follow up to AllChival’s recent reissue of Stano's debut LP, Michael O’Shea’s self-titled LP was originally released on Wire's Dome Imprint in 1982. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The background to the album is as interesting and inspiring as the artist who created it - born in Northern Ireland but raised in the Republic, O’Shea was keen to travel and escape the troubles of his home. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wandering throughout Europe and the Middle East, O’Shea found himself living and working as a relief aid in Bangladesh in the mid-Seventies where he learned to play sitar while recovering from a bout of hepatitis. A later period spent busking in France accompanied on zelochord by Algerian musician Kris Hosylan Harp led to O’Shea’s idea of combining both instruments as a homebuilt instrument - Mo Chara [Irish for "My Friend"]. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He later described the process on the back of the LP himself saying: "Having sold my sitar in Germany and being desperate for money to travel to Turkey, I conceived of the idea of combining both sitar and zelochord. The first Mo Cara was born, taken from the middle of a door, which was rescued from a skip in Munchen" </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A combination of dulcimer, zelochord, and sitar, O Shea would play it with a pair of chopsticks, striking the strings softly using Irish folk rhythms mixed with the rich, nostalgic sounds of the many Asian artists he’d encountered on his travels. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a pan-cultural sound standing at an unusual crossroads of folk, traditional, rock, progressive, jazz, electronic and post-punk worlds without hesitation. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Perfecting the instrument on the streets, there were further spells spent busking in the underground stations and cafes of London's West End and Covent Garden during the heady days of the 1970s when they were full of eccentric street entertainers, jazz improvisers and musical pioneers. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
His work with Rick Wakeman never saw the light of day but O’Shea’s contact with the world of post-punk London ensured his name would live on. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Introduced to Wire's Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis via cartoonist Tom Johnston, O’Shea eventually acquiesced to an open invite to record at their studio. Turning up unannounced in the first half of 1981 the LP was recorded in a day in the legendary Blackwing Studios and released on Dome the year after. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first side features the fifteen-minute masterpiece "No Journeys End" with the B side featuring more input from Wire in processing the Mo Chara sound. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lewis himself said years later of the forgotten masterpiece: “I always said it was the best job we ever did.” </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After an aborted LP with The The's Matt Johnson the following year, O’Shea quietly disappeared from the formal recording world. His brief but unique contribution to the music world came to a sad end in 1991 when O’Shea was struck by a post van and died a few days later in a hospital in London. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This repress on All City’s AllChival imprint has been remastered and reissued with the approval of both Dome and his surviving siblings. Recommended!</div>
