GUELEWAR - Touki Ba Banjul: Acid Trip From Banjul To Dakar (Kindred Spirits Holland) Comentários: ouki Ba Banjul is a compilation of the Gambian psych sensation Guelewar who played a major part in the development of the Afro Manding sound. From 1979-1982 the band released four albums, featuring some of Gambia's best funk tunes. This official first time ever reissue features the highlights of their career. Before Guelewar, Laaye N’Gorn, the lead singer of the band, was already one of Gambia’s most celebrated artists. He was the centre figure in The Supreme Eagles, with whom he played as the main act in one of Gambia’s succesful clubs ‘The Bambo No.1 Night Club’. In return for the succes the clubmanager offered them instruments, after which they renamed their band to the Super Alligators. Due to the mixture of western influences such as soul and funk with traditional and regional rhythms like boogaraboo and sawrouba, The Super Alligators had a unique sound. The result of this blend is known as the psychedelic sound of Gambia (Senegal). In 1973 the Super Alligators decided to rename the group to Guelewar, Wolof’s for ‘noble warrior’. After a turbulent couple of years with many musicians joining and leaving the band, Laaye managed to reform the band in order to record their first album in 1977. Over the course of the following five years Guelewar released a total of four albums, which are all filled with deep psychedelic funk gems. Due to the limited pressings, these albums are very much sought after by collectors. Kindred Spirits compiles the highlights of these albums which are presented on this double LP. Onra is probably best known for his instrumental travelogue 'Chinioseries' last year for Favourite recordings, a masterful trip into the art of keen eared sampling with a heavy lean on South Asian and Vietnamese music. Crafted for the A-side, 'My Comet' is a neat nugget of scuzzy instro grindbeats with a psychy wooze that has been shot through the best tracks from this series. But our favourite has to be 'Shhhhhhh' on the flip, craftily utilising the same sample as the first Thriller 12" and almost acting as an another alternative edit to one of our favourite tracks of the year, by applying head swimming FX to a double dope and as yet unknown electro soul sample, saving some extra funked synth noodling for this version to make it worth your while. Reworkings from Basic Channel's Mark Ernestus and Mauritz Von Oswald head the lineup, with Mauritz delivering a Ten and a half minute basic channel classic, a mighty Steppers version that unfolds in textbook Rhythm & Sound style, using the deepest tools imaginable within that impossibly spacious, fuzzed-out environment that only Basic Channel ever seem to produce so effortlessly. RED - Fingerprints (Dealmaker) Comentários: Red made his initial musical forays as a drummer, before reinventing himself as a scratch musician. He is now an accomplished producer and turntablist in the midst of releasing his debut album Fingerprints, and taking scratch music to a new level with his band, Full Fat. Red grew up in the suburbs of London, and took up drumming aged 11. Two of his biggest musical influences were his younger brothers, who are now both seasoned session musicians. With his siblings, he grew up playing and recording music constantly, learning how to play guitar and work multi-track machines. He wrote and produced his own songs with a four-track, playing every instrument from the drums, guitar, bass, to the keys, developing his song writing and production skills. Such experiences afforded him an invaluable musical upbringing which aided him once he began exploring his interest in scratching. Without a sampler or looping machine, Red began producing layered turntable tunes with a multi-track – a process which forced him to develop a different way of thinking about the turntable. In 2002, Red spent a year in the Bay Area, California, an area renowned as a turntablist hot spot. During this year he was exposed to a new, cutting edge scratch movement spearheaded by Ricci Rucker, which impacted significantly on his artistic direction. Inspired, Red returned to England and began work immediately on what would become his debut album as well as his simultaneous release, the Seen EP. These works received praise from the leading figures in scratch music today, including Ricci Rucker, Mike Boo, D-Styles, and DJ Woody, plus Hip Hop aficionados from Grand Slam/Big Daddy Magazine. Red also formed a band upon his return from California. Full Fat became the live outlet for his turntable ideas as well as a brash style of writing that Red had explored with his Seen EP. Red made the turntable the lead instrument amongst synthesizers, guitars and drums, and the band's cohesive fusion of Rock, Electro, Hip Hop & Funk has meant they have enjoyed massive crossover appeal and are tipped for big things. PERCEE P - Perseverance (The Remix) (Stones Throw) Comentários: PERCEE P came up in the Patterson Houses Projects of the Bronx, NY. He started hearing the precursors of hip-hop out of his windows before he was in kindergarten, around 1973. By ten, Percee had a mic in his hand. He debuted in 1988 with homeboy D-Nique on “Let The Homicides Begin” (Gothan City Records, 12” single). A few years later, his freestyles on the hugely influential Stretch & Bobbito radio show on WKCR parlayed into what should have been Percee's big major label breakthrough, 1992's “Lung Collapsing Lyrics” (Atlantic/Big Beat, 12” single), the now legendary Fast Rap masterpiece. Though the record established reputation as one of the best rappers in the field, his break never came. For most of the rest of the 1990s Percee P laid low, working in retail and as a messenger, dropping only the occasional indie single and a few guest verses. Percee wasn't gung-ho about the rap game again until the late '90s, when he truly went for self and began his own guerilla distribution campaign, selling his CDs face-to-face to patrons outside of New York's Fat Beats Records, establishing himself as something of a local landmark. Percee's pavement pounding around Fat Beats did more than keep him fed - it introduced him to a new generation of hip-hop collaborators, cats like Aesop Rock, Jedi Mind Tricks, C-Rayz Walz, Wildchild, Edan and Jurassic 5 among others. All of these emerging underground artists sought contributions from Percee P - not only because they considered him a bona fide legend and Fast Rap pioneer, but also because they regarded him as a peer, hustling his trade with the same hunger as them. Percee met his future label execs out on the street as he sold them CDs. Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf and Egon met with Percee during a series of NYC visits, and, impressed by his constantly evolving lyricism, brought him to Los Angeles, leading to appearances on albums by Wildchild and Jaylib in 2003. They signed him to an album deal shortly thereafter. Percee P's debut on Stones Throw has been anticipated for 3 years, through selective guest appearances, the Chrome Children world tour and a handful of singles. For years Guilty Simpson has been a rock on the Detroit hip-hop circuit alongside those such as J Dilla, Slum Village, Eminem (whom Guilty still calls “Marshall”) & D12, Obie Trice, Proof, Phat Kat and Black Milk. A member of the Almighty Dreadnaughtz crew, Guilty emerged as a sound to be reckoned with after linking with producer Dilla in 2001. BADU, Erykah - New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) (Universal Mowtown) Comentários: What's the freakquency, Erykah? The five years since her last album, Worldwide Underground (make that last EP, so more like eight years since her last proper album), make clear that her release frequency lags about as far behind as you could expect from a one-woman jam band at the forefront of a head collective. But the freakquency? That's pitched as high as a kite, now more than ever. Badu's intense New AmErykah: Part One (4th World War), the opening salvo of a promised two-disc series (three if you count a live album Universal is promising in late 2008), is as sonically ambitious as anything she's done to date. It's sort of the flip to Worldwide Underground in that both albums are so diffuse as to seem careless and haphazard to some listeners. But whereas the earlier album maintained a laidback, even keel (held together under the influence of the Mizell brothers), New AmErykah is some cracked, urgent, just plain weird boho avant shit. Worldwide Underground was Parliament. New AmErykah is Funkadelic. Assisted by producers Madlib, 9th Wonder, Mike "Chav" Chavarria, and posthumously, J Dilla, the album's very existence as an incomplete piece of a larger project is, at least for the next few months, a brazen continuation of Badu's "rough draft" ethos, which first started to really emerge with Mama's Gun and the conflicting track lists and unfinished lyrics in the liner notes. Not unlike Mary J. Blige, Badu the vocalist exudes so much confidence and authority that she almost seems to overemphasize her improvisational persona. Blige has her bipolar relapses, Badu has her pot-addled "What was I saying again?" disorganization. Both are, to a degree, calculated in an attempt to cultivate a measure of realness. In the same sense that I'd rather watch the stripped-down meta of recent Abbas Kiarostami films more than heart-to-heart interviews on Oprah, I'd much rather tolerate Badu's occasionally overbaked—yeah, I went there—mental mélange more than Blige recreating Julianne Moore's mirror monologue from Safe. And I say that as someone who just argued with one of this publication's other music critics that any lyrics more complicated than "Hey, yeah you, get out on the floor" had no place in dance music. Still, as is often the case, an artist who gives off the impression that they're working with less than a full deck usually gives listeners more to chew. Typically I'll listen to an album once or twice before I write a review. I'm sort of a strict sensualist when it comes to music, and hence perhaps put too much trust in the initial rush of pop music and much too little stock in lyrics. (Which, lets face it, is not exactly hard to do when the cultural standard rhymes "The boys they want to sex me" with "They say I'm really sexy.") I've listened to New AmErykah at least seven times already and still feel as though I'm jumping mama's gun by even writing about it before giving it another seven listens. Badu's spare, pointillist lyrics are almost constantly folded deep within dense, heavy arrangements. "The Cell," a ruthless, steely hard-bop sprint, contains a lot of menacing lyrics about "shots from the po-po" and a howling refrain of "We're not well," but the subtext barely registers against the wild, walking bassline and decaying guitar riff. Which, of course, actually makes the song all the more terrifying. And it's in good cohmpany with the boiling terror of "Twinkle" and the uncompromising spareness of the toy-xylophone ode to hip-hop "The Healer" (a track given a once-over with an auto-equalizer effect, just to make it sound even more like an unfinished demo). Lest the ominous elements run rampant enough to actually constitute a "statement," which would run counter to the album's real statement of not actually having one, Badu also throws in a few tracks that would've slotted easily into either Worldwide Underground ("Honey") or Mama's Gun (the flute-laden "Soldier," with its election year-friendly shout-outs to the troops "in Iraqi fields, sittin' on time to kill" and those in New Orleans "baptized when the levee broke"). While neither "Honey" nor "Soldier" are lazy retreads on Badu's part, is it any wonder their familiar elements inspired Motown to make those two songs (both far sunnier in isolation than the album as a whole) the album's first two singles? "What if there were no niggas, only master teachers?" is the rhetorical question asked of peer musicians multiple times in the sweeping, swangin' dirge "Master Teacher," which Badu answers with "I'm in the search of something new." It's not even the line itself that suggests Badu's mission to brush aside the staid quality of current R&B so much as her risky, raw vocal delivery. (The Billie Holiday voice is back, if only for a little while.) And it's in line with the willful disorganization of this and her last two albums. Polish and coherence equal consumer-ready product, to be used until played out and then shelved. In a matter not entirely original but still befitting an ex-neo-soul diva getting extra comfortable with her inner Yippie, she overlays a rerecorded excerpt of Peter Finch's "First you've got to get mad" monologue from Network. Somewhere Marlene Warfield's afro-puffed corporate radical Laureen Hobbs is listening to this record and nodding, "Right on." in slant magazine [Para Ouvir/Samples]

VA - Droppin Science - Greatest Samples From The Blue Note Lab (Blue Note) Comentários: At least in its presentation, Droppin' Science: Greatest Samples From the Blue Note Lab suggests yet another appeal to hip-hop genealogists, the kind of people who obsess over The-Breaks.com and are diligent readers of Oliver Wang's blog. But this is not your run-of-the-mill "roots of rap" or "best breakbeats" compilation, and not just because you won't find "Impeach the President" (which has been, according to The-Breaks, sampled in 116 different rap songs) or James Brown's "Funky Drummer" (181 songs). A few songs on the album have been tapped for use only once, and more than half of these songs bear relevance solely to the early-'90s conscious-rap movement and groups like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. The people who put together the compilation seem to be aware that the greatest samples often don't come from the greatest songs—a fact that often gets overlooked in the obsession over hip-hop's antecedents; quality and uniqueness, more than propensity to be sampled, seems to have driven the song selection here. Have you ever actually listened to "Impeach the President"? The sparse drumbeats, subtle groove, and the tepidly sung chorus make an only half-hearted call for revolutionary regime change. If you want to rile somebody up, better to play them Wu-Tang's "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nothing to Fuck Wit," which samples "Impeach the President" but is eons more memorable than its ancestor. In spite of its subtitle, then, Droppin' Science offers more a snapshot of Blue Note history than a snapshot of hip-hop history. Once you get past the fact that the compilation doesn't represent all of sampling culture, though, and you tune your ears away from just beat analysis and sample recognition, a great listen awaits. All of the cuts on the album originate from the late '60s to the mid '70s, a time when the distinctions between jazz and the rest of mainstream pop music were not nearly as delineated as they are today. Listeners who think jazz ended in 1970 will certainly enjoy discovering some of the talents on display here. Although a few well-chosen swing, smooth R&B, and cinematic big-band tracks are thrown in seemingly for diversity's sake, it's the cool-tempered swagger found on Ronnie Foster's songs "Mystic Brew" (borrowed by A Tribe Called Quest for "Electric Relaxation"), Grant Green's "Down Here on the Ground" (Tribe, again, for "Vibes & Stuff"), and Lonnie Smith's "Spinnin' Wheel" (Tribe, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, and no joke, Brian Austin Green) that provides the album's dominant theme. Most of these bands run on the model created by Booker T. & the MGs: a tight rhythm section, sweltering B-3 organ runs, proto-funk guitar, and blustery horn ornamentals. Forty years ago serious jazz groups were averse neither to recognizable structures (verse–chorus–verse, even without vocals) nor the covering of pop songs; Lou Donaldson's version of the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing" rivals the MGs' rendition of "Twist and Shout" (itself sung by the Isleys before the infamous Liverpudlians, by the way) in how it reconstitutes the original's sexual, combustible energy into something wickedly understated and as beautiful as pure calculus. In a nod to earlier jazz eras, Joe Williams's surly "Get Out of My Life Woman" (sampled by Kool G and Biz Markie) saunters across a track of squawking horns and tinkling keys. David Axelrod's sweeping orchestral "The Edge" (probably the most ostentatious and instantly recognizable sample here, from Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode") may seem a little out of place, but listeners new to Axelroad's cinematic visions will surely not complain once they hear it, and they should seek out the essential Axelrod at Capitol, 1966-1970.The tracks on Droppin' Science take us back not only to those more optimistic days of the early '70s, post-integration and pre-urban decay, but also to the much tougher late '80s, when producers like Prince Paul sought a sunnier, more sophisticated ambiance as a contrast to the harsh sound collages of the Bomb Squad. It makes sense why jazz with both a palpable connection to the streets and an aesthetic of an aloof intelligence sounded so good accompanying the cool-kid witticisms of Q-Tip and Guru. The dusty funk soul sound of the original remains on much of the album but it’s been pushed in a diverse set of direction from Hammond-funk to electronica, via dub-step, jazz, house and reggae. An Aaron Jerome, BBE nu-blood, mix of ‘Feeling Free’ opens up the album with a smooth jazzy feel while Breakin’ Bread’s Rob Life serves us a break heavy version of the title track a la DJ Format. Remixing duties for ‘If It Ain’t Love’ fall to Mr Scruff who drops some cheeky flute samples and reworks the drums. ‘No One’s Going to Love You’ becomes a bit of a dub-step space boogie in the hands of Blackbeard with the dub vibe continued by Sinbad on ‘Invisible Man’. ‘The Soul Investigator’s Theme’ offers more of the spacey feels, Mike Slott remix, and The Dynamics throw in a little skanking with ‘My 4 Leaf Clover’.Bugz In The Attic’s Afronaut is brought on board for a broken beat take on ‘Holding On’ while an alternative version of ‘The Soul Investigator’s Theme’ is offered up by hip hop producer Ghost.
