But this is not your run-of-the-mill "roots of rap" or "best breakbeats" compilation, and not just because you won't find "Impeach the President" (which has been, according to The-Breaks, sampled in 116 different rap songs) or James Brown's "Funky Drummer" (181 songs). KING TUBBY meets THE UPSETTER - At The Grass Roots Of Dub (Studio 16) Comentários: Having loved this album as a white label for many many years, its really nice to be handling a full reissue of this classic classic dub piece from prime period 1975. Questions have been often raised about its provenance, purporting to be a King Tubby and Upsetter album, in fact only the mixes are theirs in the respective studios – but this minor gripe aside – Winston Edwards and the Natty Dread fashion a true heavyweight set of instrumentals, Tubbys is in ticklers good form, and the Perry tracks have that glorious fuzzy compressed feel and instinctive editing which speaks of heavy runnings at the Black Ark. The production level is amazing -- with full color images throughout, and a wealth of information on each title -- plus detailed additional features on the labels, mixers, and other folks involved with the phenomenon! There's even a section on rare club flyers -- one more way that the book gives a key glimpse into the underground scene of the time -- and even if you're not a top-level collector, there's plenty of information here for any fan of older disco! The two clicked immediately and decided to record a few sessions together. Ilhan brought in Thor Madsen (guitar player from Wax Poetic) and together they entered the journey now presented to as the project Our Theory, a statement of sounds that resonates with a cinematic/orchestral feel. WILLIS, Nicole/THE SOUL INVESTIGATORS/VARIOUS - Keep Reachin' Up Remixed (Above The Clouds) Comentários: Brooklyn born Helsinki based Nicole Willis is back with the deliciously titled Soul Investigators, and this time round she’s all mixed up.As the title suggests ‘Keep Reachin’ Up Remixed’ is a reworked version of Willis’ 2005 smash ‘Keep Reachin’ Up’ – the album that propelled her into the spotlight and got heads like Giles Peterson and Mr Scruff talking. The dusty funk soul sound of the original remains on much of the album but it’s been pushed in a diverse set of direction from Hammond-funk to electronica, via dub-step, jazz, house and reggae. An Aaron Jerome, BBE nu-blood, mix of ‘Feeling Free’ opens up the album with a smooth jazzy feel while Breakin’ Bread’s Rob Life serves us a break heavy version of the title track a la DJ Format.
