M'BOOM - Re Percussion (Think! Japan)

M'BOOM - Re Percussion (Think Japan) Comentários: A highly percussive little album – and the first-ever appearance of the M'Boom ensemble on record! You might know the group from their later fame under the guidance of Max Roach, but here the combo is a much more equally-assembled cast of players – featuring not just Roach, but percussionists Roy Brooks, Joe Chambers, Omar Clay, Freddie Waits, Richard Pablo Landrum, and Warren Smith! Given that lineup, you've got a group that represents the forefront of jazz and creative percussion work at the start of the 70s – and added to the mix is the ultimate freedom allowed by the Strata East label – which has the group really stretching out in these amazing ways! Things are never too free or outside, and there's always a nicely spiritual core to the record – but there is an incredible shift between percussive rhythms and melody – on instrumentation that includes vibes, tympani, xylophone, marimba, drums, and plenty of percussion

Matthew LARKIN CASSELL - The Complete Works

Matthew LARKIN CASSELL - The Complete Works (Stones Throw US) Comentários: San Francisco's Matthew Larkin Cassell presents his '...Complete Works' for Stones Throw. As the story goes... Larkin happened to notice a sample of his music in the Madvillainy Remixes set and promptly contacted the label. The outcome of that exchange is this LP, compiling each of his three DIY-produced and self-released records. He name checks the Sons of Champlin, Tower of Power, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, and Laura Nyro as his influences and that's clearly evident in his soulful mixture of rock, jazz and pop. Original copies of those fateful records now sell for stupid money and Cassell is now producing new material. LP is housed in full colour gatefold sleeve with original artwork by the artist. in boomkat [ Para Ouvir/Samples ]

Roy & THE ARTISTIC TRUTH BROOKS feat EDDIE JEFFERSON/BLACK ROSE - Ethnic Expressions: Live At Small's Paradise NYC

BROOKS, Roy & THE ARTISTIC TRUTH - Ethnic Expressions (Jazzman) Comentários: Amazing sounds from drummer Roy Brooks -- very spiritual work that's quite a change from his straighter soul jazz of the 60s! The album's right up there with Roy's better-known (though still rare) live performance at Town Hall -- or his classic Free Slave session -- and like those records, this one explodes with a raw power that's really amazing -- heavy drums from Brooks, driving a collective of righteous musicians that really stretch out in the free space of the recording! The lineup shifts a bit from track to track, but there's a cohesive spirit to the record that comes from Brooks' bold spirit -- a joyous, soulful, post-Coltrane sort of energy -- let loose in the lead, to guide the talents of players who include John Stubblefield on tenor, Sonny Fortune on alto, Olu Dara and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpets, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone sax, Joe Bonner on piano, and Reggie Workman o

KINDRED SPIRITS ENSEMBLE - Love Is Supreme

KINDRED SPIRITS ENSEMBLE - Love Is Supreme (Kindred Spirits) Comentários: The Kindred Spirits Ensemble join forces again for a beautiful set of spiritual jazz standards. The weighty ensemble comprises of some 20 odd arrangers, instrumentalists and even a choir, enabling them to embellish lush versions of classics from Pharoah Sanders 'The Creator Has A Masterplan' and John Coltrane 'Naima'. If you felt the recent records from Carlos Niño or have a soft spot for Sun-ra, this is your bag. in boomkat [ Para Ouvir/Samples ] Kindred Spirits Ensemble - Strings of Life from Kindred Spirits on Vimeo .

KINGDOM AFROCKS - Live In Afro City

KINGDOM AFROCKS - Live In Afro City ( P-Vine Japan ) Comentários: Having built up a reputation as a good live act, the nine-piece Kingdom Afrocks have chosen to showcase their live show on their debut album, which features six performances from 2007 at three different Tokyo venues. They are perhaps one of the only current Japanese bands playing afrobeat-inspired tunes and they attack the genre with plenty of energy, as anyone who has been to one of their shows can confirm. in tokyo jazz notes [ Para Ouvir/Samples ]

PANTS, James - Future Delight

PANTS, James - Future Delight (Stones Throw US) Comentários: On the A side, some incredible disco from James Pants, very much on a eighties The Clash meets 'cosmic boogie' tip with great drums and synths. The flip is more along spiritual jazz lines. Limited fanclub 45! Well Recommended. in rushhour [ Para Ouvir/Samples1 ] [ 2 ] De repente aparece um nome para isto: Freshbeat. Ouvido treinado, sentido rítmico, reciclagem sábia e muitos a

OUR THEORY - Yeah, That's Right

OUR THEORY - Yeah, That's Right (Nublu France) Comentários: While out on tour, Nublu founder Ilhan Ersahin, ended up in a jam somewhere with French trumpet player Erik Truffaz. The two clicked immediately and decided to record a few sessions together. Ilhan brought in Thor Madsen (guitar player from Wax Poetic) and together they entered the journey now presented to as the project Our Theory, a statement of sounds that resonates with a cinematic/orchestral feel. The melodies, harmonies and rhythm transport you to the middle of New York City with one window looking into Paris, another into London and one window looking straight into the nature of a distant place which might be paradise. Call it the jazz of today or nu-jazz as its more commonly known in Europe today, or simply as Ilhan prefers it: music. This 12" features Jan Jelinek's (~Scape) minimal left-field remix of "Yeah, That's Right" a song originally written as a tribute to late great tenor sax man Ed

SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA - Some Blues But Not The Kind That's Blue

SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA - Some Blues But Not The Kind That's Blue (Atavistic US) Comentários: The third deluxe RA reissue in the new O-Card format from the UMS, released in conjunction with EL SATURN Records is here: A superb reissue of adelicious, seldom heard Saturn Records document from 1970- replete with two alternate takes of a previously unissued classic AND an "Untitled" piecefrom the original '77 sessions... all available for the first time on CD!"Sun Ra's career-long committment to his Arkestra allowed the pianist and bandleader little time for the elaboration of less populous projects. Therewere brief, tantalising glimpses, however, into his small group concept-including a rash of recordings made in the mid 1970s. There are, for instance, two great double-LPs of quartet music, tenor saxophonist John Gilmore gloriously forward, made for the Italian Horo label in 1978. A year prior, a stripped-down group made a set of studio recordings focused on s
